Giorgio Armani and Samsung Electronics today unveiled the Emporio Armani Samsung Mobile, Night Effect.
Designed by Giorgio Armani and made by Samsung, the Emporio Armani Night Effect is equipped with an AMOLED display and LED light effects. The 2.2-inch QVGA screen offers deeper, richer colors, providing for a vivid view. The side lights up in red, green or blue colors every time users are called or make calls. The illuminating LEDs came from Giorgio Armani's trips to Tokyo where the Armani/Ginza tower is lit-up with decorative lights in the shape of bamboo leaves. The sleek body is designed to provide for a rubber-like feel and a hair-lined keypad and reinforced glass display offer a simple, sturdy elegance. The Emporio Armani logo in metal is adorned on the back with a hidden external speaker. The graphical user interface (GUI) and audio user interface (AUI) includes special Emporio Armani compositions as ringtone. The Night Effect has an embedded 3.2-megapixel camera, music-control key, FM radio, standard 3.5mm audio jack, and support for microSD cards plus 120MB internal memory. Downloading large files, streaming videos, and holding video conversations are easier with HSDPA speeds as fast as 3.6 Mbps. With Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0, users can connect to peripherals including wireless headsets and mobile printing. The handset comes with a neck strap, earphone and a CD-like fabric package case. "Paris may be known as The City of Lights, but Tokyo is The City of Neon Lights by night-time," said Giorgio Armani. "For this young, cool, and social crowd, the Night Effect mobile is the perfect accessory." With black and white color options, the Night Effect will be available in major European countries from November. After being launched in Europe, the phone will come to South East Asia and Middle East Asia in this year.

Sony Ericsson will launch a mobile phone service with unlimited music downloads within weeks, the company said today, as it competes with Nokia in expanding business beyond the sale of handsets.
Sony Ericsson's PlayNow Plus will be available solely through telecoms operators. Subscribers will be able to access to millions of songs and keep up to 300 songs after their 6-18 month contracts end. PlayNow Plus draws from Sony Ericsson's collaboration with Omnifone and licensing terms with music labels including EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music. "Expanding our PlayNow service portfolio by adding PlayNow Plus and by launching PlayNow arena in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and the UK during the fourth quarter, are key elements of the Sony Ericsson service strategy," said Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President at Sony Ericsson. "These steps and the addition of Universal's catalogue to the music offering in both services gives us every possibility to provide customers and consumers with what we feel is important and requested - an unparalleled user experience on Sony Ericsson devices." PlayNow Plus will launch with operator Telenor in Sweden in the fourth quarter of this year, with further roll-outs around the world beginning in early 2009. A special edition of the Sony Ericsson W902 Walkman phone will be the first product released with an integrated PlayNow Plus service.

Apple said it will replace power adapters sold with its popular iPhone 3G device due to a risk the prongs will snap and cause people to be jolted by electricity.

The part the Cupertino-based company is offering to replace is an "Ultracompact USB power adapter" reportedly included with iPhone 3G models sold in Japan, Canada, Mexico, the United States and a half dozen South American countries. "We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported," Apple said on a webpage. Apple advised iPhone 3G owners to charge their phones by plugging them into computers or with a standard-sized Apple power adapter until the potentially problematic part is replaced. "Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every Ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge," said Apple. Instructions for replacing Apple adapters were posted at www.apple.com/support/usbadapter/exchangeprogram/ .

Visa said it is developing a mobile payment service for the new cell phone powered by Google's Android system.
San Francisco-based company said Android users will be able to receive near real-time alerts about transactions via their mobile devices. Customers will also be able to use location-based mapping technology to find ATM machines and nearby stores. The announcement came two days after T-Mobile unveiled its G1 phone, the first handset to feature Google's technology. The T-Mobile G1 is schedule to arrive in U.S. stores Oct. 22. "By developing these mobile services for the Android platform, Visa has taken a major step toward achieving our goal of combining two of the world's most powerful and ubiquitous consumer innovations, electronic payments and mobile technology," said Elizabeth Buse, Global Head of Product at Visa. "U.S. consumers will, for the first time, be able to download Visa mobile service applications directly to their handsets." The software will be available to U.S. consumers by the end of the year, starting with Chase Visa cardholders. Visa is also developing payment software to let consumers make mobile payments in stores.
