Keep your gadgets dry and happy

It's easy to forget that the Earth is mostly covered and divided up by large expanses of water. We instinctively think of the earth's surface as forests, roads, fields and carpeting. Since you are likely to go near or on water at some point, we think you should remember to plan accordingly.

These OverBoard Waterproof Gadget Cases are 100% waterproof and float if dropped in water. They are perfect for safeguarding your gadgets (phone, camera, MP3 player) and also keep out dust, sand and dirt. The Phone/GPS Case lets you take your phone (or compact GPS) to places you wouldn't normally dare and will protect your phone without stopping you from using it. The Camera Case lets you take pictures down to 19ft (6m) underwater and is perfect for digital cameras without a telescopic zoom lens. The MP3 Case is a heavy duty waterproof padded MP3 case with Pro-Sports Arm Strap. Your MP3 player is fully useable when safely sealed in the case. Powerful Monkey in your Pocket

We have known for a long time that monkeys are our friends. After all they are our genetic brothers who might have become human with just slightly more effort. Problem is monkeys are not too useful... they mainly eat, make messes and hang from the chandelier.

However, here at ThinkGeek we have discovered a new and more useful type of monkey... the Powermonkey! This little silver charger doesn't look much like a traditional simian but it is significantly more helpful. Charge it up from an AC power outlet and stash it in your pocket for later use (the Powermonkey can retain a standby charge for up to 1 year). When your favorite device runs out of power (cell phone, iPod, PSP, PDA...) , simply pop out the Powermonkey and jack it in. Your portable device can now run for hours with nary a power adapter in sight. Good Monkey!

This mini slider cell phone features a built in MP3 playing boombox that gets surprisingly loud. The best part, you don't have to forsake your existing cell phone (unless you want to). Simply pop the SIM card out of your current cell phone from AT&T/Cingular or T-Mobile and insert it into the back of the Mini Boombox Cell Phone and power it up. Call your existing cell phone number and your Mini Boombox phone starts ringing. Of course you get all the standard cell phone features you would expect including a 1.3 megapixel camera, voice dialing, SMS/MMS messaging and WAP Browser. One nice trick we like is the ability for the phone to read aloud the numbers of incoming calls using voice synthesis. The Mini Boombox GSM Cell Phone comes with 256 MB of built in memory to store your MP3 music files or videos, and the storage is expandable up to 2GB via a Micro SD card slot. Now you can share your musical tastes with everyone around you without making your old phone mad.

IMPORTANT
The Mini Boombox GSM Cell Phone is an unlocked tri-band GSM cell phone with no included SIM card. You will need existing service with either T-Mobile or AT&T/Cingular to use this phone in the USA. It will NOT work with Verizon or Sprint. You can use your existing SIM card from your current cell phone (in which case the Boombox phone will just become your cell phone with the same number and same voicemail while the SIM card is inserted), or buy a pre-paid SIM card from T-Mobile or AT&T/Cingular.

Your cellphone is your lifeline to the outside world. Without it, you might as well be some caveman, lost in time and pounding out text-messages on cavern walls in pig blood. Please, for the sake of all that's digital, we must not - nay WILL NOT allow that to happen! As long as there is breath in our lungs, and conveniently packaged 2800mAh chemical-electric storage cells in convenience stores, our cellphones will NEVER die!

This is the point of the movie where the patriotic music swells.

Cellphones were originally designed to keep you connected while out in the field. Though "the field" can be rather lacking in wall outlets, so when your phone's batteries run dry, and you've gotta top up, you'll need a portable charger. The Turbocell Charger uses simple and readily available AA batteries to pump some go-juice into your cellphone's lithium ions. As small as a pack of gum, and with enough connectors to mate with nearly any manufacturer's phone, you'll be good to go, no matter where it is you're going.

The average AA battery can add up to 2 hours of extra talk-time, which might be just what you needed - especially if, during the above movie, you have to hack into the aliens' computer network to upload a virus from your Mac. It would suck if your cellphone gave out at the last minute, and would make a terrible downer of a movie ending.

We know that cell phones have gotten dirt cheap compared to what we had to fork out over a decade ago, but to purchase one for less than a dollar? That’s now possible with the Newsmy C100 phone from China. This pink-colored handset will target young kids and operate on the GSM 900/1800MHz frequency bands, featuring both English and Chinese languages for navigation. Features include :-
  • 1.5″ TFT display with 176 x 132 resolution
  • Up to 100 phonebook entries
  • 180 minutes of talk time
  • 75 hours of standby time
  • Incoming call firewall
  • Parents Control Mode
  • Currency Converter
  • Speakerphone

From China, eh? Hopefully it isn’t tainted with melamine or something, especially where kids are its main market target.

It is no surprise that the official slogan of the iCEphone is “the changing shape of mobile communications”. After all, it is common to see a mobile device that can fold out with one hinge, but this iCEphone has two hinges.

So, this three-sectioned phone is a four-in-one device. Not only is it a quadband 3G touchscreen cell phone, it is also a PDA with a QWERTY keyboard, a games console with a controller pad, and a GPS navigation system.

All of these features, except for the games console, are designed to help doctors. The iCEphone is billed as “the medical phone”, and it comes with on-board first aid software, medical history storage, and caller collect international emergency helpline.

Other features include two SIM slots as well as a slot for microSD. There is also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3.1 megapixel camera.

I believe that this phone was originally designed for British military standards. I’m not certain how it ended up being billed as “a medical phone”, but I can see this phone being used by everybody. Who wouldn’t want to have all these features on their cellular phone, and I’m not even a doctor or a soldier.

My source nor the official site give a price on this item, which is a shame. I would like to know where to buy it, and how much it is.

Remember back when cellular phones didn’t have cameras? Now it is a requirement. Considering the low megapixel cameras that are often tacked on to high-priced smartphones, it is nice to see a cellular phone that invests a lot of time in the camera.

In the case of the JingPeng E1181, it tried something new. This phone allows the user to completely detach the camera as well as its rechargeable battery and place it up to 30 feet away. Wireless video footage can then be transmitted live from the camera section to the phone portion via RF. The user can then watch it on the phone’s three inch screen.

It sounds like something that James Bond would use on a covert mission. It also sounds like something perverts would use to get some shots of the ladies locker room. I suppose “use wisely” should be stamped on this product.

Still, you have to admire a company that tries something as innovative as a cellular phone/camera combo. Yes, most users already have a camera on their phone, but it is only used in cases when they don’t have their better-quality digital camera available. Why not make a cellular phone camera that is so good that it deserves to be detached from the cellular phone altogether?

Let us hope that JinPeng did this, but my source does not have the Megapixel count of the camera. I do know that the E1181 has other features like a touchscreen, FM tuner, Dual Sim Slots, and Bluetooth 2.0. It is available for a price of $155.

One of the most obnoxious things is when you finally decide to take a break from work to make a cup of coffee or tea. Then after you’ve brought back the steaming cup, you get wrapped up in work again and inevitably it gets cold. You don’t want to get back up to heat it, either because you’re busy or are just too lazy. Which is when a cup warmer comes in very handy. This isn’t the first cup warmer to be sold, but this one offers a retro design. That at least gives it a little more edge above the competition.

It sadly doesn’t have any built-in extras, like a clock or a USB hub. However, it’s a neat design and it’s affordable, so it’s probably worth checking out. It’s made to look like a gas stove and even has LED lights to make it seem like there is a flame. The warmer comes in either orange or blue and is of course, powered by USB and not gas. You can purchase it on Gadget4all for $15.

There is nothing that gives a gadget blogger more pleasure than to report on gadgets from the Far East like Thanko and Brando. You might remember the MP4 Camera watch I reported on a few days ago from Thanko, and today’s interesting Asian product is the Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard (actual name) from Brando.

This keyboard has three obvious features in its name. The first is the wireless capacity, and it uses 2.4GHz rather than Bluetooth. The second is the backlit feature that makes it glow in the dark, which requires two AAA batteries to stay in operation. The third is its size. I’m not certain why you would want a tiny keyboard, but considering how these netbooks are getting increasingly smaller, there might be a demand for smaller keyboards for a desktop.

It has been suggested that the Brando Backlit Wireless Keyboard could be used for home theater PCs. That idea has a lot of merit, since consumer electronics companies are making a lot of All-in-one PC/computers these days. Personally, I believe we are entering an age where if you want a computer then it will automatically include software for a television, and televisions will be installed with computers.

Yes, we all look forward to the day when PCs and television markets will be as one. As for today, you should be able to pre-order the Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard from the Brando Web site for about $47.00.

This isn’t the first time that we covered the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, but I’ve just learned that Lenovo is planning to upgrade this model with the W700ds, which has one of the coolest features of any notebook, a slide out screen!

The screen is a 10.2 inch LED display that the user can pull out from the side, and has the option of tilting it forward or backward on a hinge. You can’t help but love a feature like this, as a laptop will have an extra screen for word processing, text messaging, or whatever you didn’t have space enough to do on your laptop screen before.

Other features on the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds include the Intel Core 2 Extreme or Core 2 Quad, 8 GB of RAM, 980 GB of storage memory, and the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M. At maximum brightness on the screens, the battery life isn’t long at about 2 hours.

The Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds will be available to ship next month, at a price of about $3,600. In case you don’t think that is worth it, you should check out a sneak preview when the W700ds will be on display at CES next month. By the way, we at Coolest Gadgets are going to give you some excellent coverage of CES, so stay tuned for that.

Yesterday, Sprint announced that it will launch a dual-mode 3G/4G wireless broadband modem specifically designed for laptops. This device, known as the Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300, is designed to plug right in the USB port for quick Internet access.

The U300 is able to access Sprint’s 3G cellular data network and the new WiMax wireless network that Sprint is building as part of their new Clearwire program. This 4G program will allow download speeds between 2 Mbps and 4 Mpbs.

The 4G network has only been recently launched in the Baltimore area, but it has been slow to catch on. With any luck, 4G should be in place in every major city by the end of 2009. If a user should be out of range of the 4G network, it will automatically go to the 3G, which has download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps.

The U300 should be available on Sunday, and costs about $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. As for the new 3G and 4G combination plan, that will probably cost about $79.99 in monthly fees. Some of you might find that high, but it is a small price to pay for being able to have Internet access wherever you go.

Battery chargers are one thing tech lovers can’t live without. All of the small gadgets that require AA and AAA batteries make it almost impossible to deal without having rechargeable batteries around. If you’ve managed so far without rechargeable batteries, you’ve likely ended up spending a decent amount to restock on all the necessary batteries. Well energizer has a new battery charger that will not only keep your batteries charged, but give your USB gadgets a boost, all using solar power.

It can hold AA and AAA batteries just like your average battery charger. Not only does it have solar power that can charge your batteries, but it also has an AC jack for cloudy days. To give your USB gadgets a little more juice, just plug it into the portable charger. It’d be a great charger for travel or just at home. This isn’t out just yet, but it’s expected to be priced around $50. Likely more info will be released at the 2009 CES.

Nokia Messaging comes to Nokia devices with support for Mail on Ovi and the world’s
most popular email and IM solutions
New service for consumer email and instant messaging on Nokia devices, along with Ovi email address for email and cross access to other Ovi services from a mobile phone or a PC
Barcelona, Spain - Nokia today announced the launch of Nokia Messaging, which mobilizes consumer email and consumer instant messaging (IM) solutions on Nokia devices. Nokia Messaging will give millions of consumers access to email and IM accounts from Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail and Google Talk, and AOL Mail as well as email solutions from thousands of ISPs around the world on the majority of Nokia devices. Nokia also introduced the online portal for Mail on Ovi, which will enable PC users to create and access Ovi email accounts as well as gain cross access to other Ovi services with just a
single sign-on account.
”We believe everybody should have mobile messaging – it’s not a privilege service that’s meant only for a certain segment of the market. With Nokia Messaging, our customers can simply and affordably gain mobile access to the world’s most popular email and IM accounts. We are making mobile messaging an affordable experience for everyone, not just for those with specialized phones designed for messaging, but for everyone with a Nokia device. In response to overwhelming consumer feedback that messaging is a critical, must-have feature, Nokia has responded with solutions to bring messaging to the broadest range of devices and to ensure the service works with the most popular messaging services in the market. Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, email accounts provided by thousands of ISPs around the world, and even brand new Nokia-provided email accounts, can now be accessed from mobile phones with a few simple clicks, directly from the home-screen,” said Tom Furlong, Senior Vice President, Consumer Messaging, Services & Software, Nokia.

Mail on Ovi
Nokia announced the introduction of web access to Mail on Ovi, which gives users 1GB of storage space and spam filters to block unwanted emails. Creating a Mail on Ovi account will give users access to their email, as well as cross access to other Ovi services, both on the mobile phone and on the PC. The beta version of Mail on Ovi will roll out globally in December 2008 in 12 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Bengali, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia on all currently shipping Nokia Series 40 devices, with many more languages to be added later. The web access version will launch in February 2009.

Nokia Messaging
Nokia Messaging will launch commercially in the first quarter of 2009 in Australia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and Venezuela, and in select countries later in the year. Agreements with key operators will establish Nokia Messaging as an operator supported service so that users who purchase a data plan that includes Nokia Messaging will be able to take full access of the built-in push email and IM access without additional service charges.

The Nokia Messaging push email service is available today for free as a limited-period beta trial. Owners of popular Nokia S60 devices such as Nokia E71 and Nokia N95 can immediately go to email.nokia.com and install the service on their devices. Nokia Messaging is an email application that’s been designed from the ground up to support mobile email. The application makes it simple to set-up the email account – all users have to enter are their email address and password, and emails are seamlessly pushed to their mobile device. Nokia Messaging also makes it simple to read, send, forward and reply to emails, download and read
attachments, and attach files to emails directly on the Nokia device.

Nokia Messaging is immediately available on a wide range of Nokia S60 devices to mobilize consumer email. Instant messaging and support for Nokia Series 40 devices will be enabled in the second half of 2009.

With Nokia Messaging and Mail on Ovi together, Nokia will enable consumers with and without email accounts to experience mobile email as a standard part of the Nokia device experience. To date, Nokia has shipped about 200 million devices that immediately enable the launch of its messaging solutions, including Nokia Messaging, Mail on Ovi and corporate mobile email (Microsoft Exchange Activesync).

medion-akoya-p8610

Medion’s netbooks and GPS units may have been garnering the company the most attention as of late, but it’s also still in the traditional laptop business, and it looks like it’s new 18-inch Akoya P8610 model should turn at least a few heads, and not just for its sheer size. This one is aimed squarely at those looking for a media center in laptop form, with it boasting a 1,680 x 945, 18.4-inch display, a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T5800 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 512MB GeForce 9600M GS graphics card that can operate on its own or in hybrid mode, a Blu-ray drive, and a 5.1 Dolby audio system, among other media-friendly features. This being Medion, it also won’t completely break the bank, with it setting you back a fairly reasonable £800, or just over $1,100.

t303_daisy_edition_2

Sony Ericsson has released a special version of its low-to-mid range T303 handset exclusively for T-Mobile UK. It’s the Sony Ericsson T303 Daisy edition, which is specs-wise identical to the original device. The difference is in the looks, as I’m sure you can see for yourself from the image above. In addition, the special edition device also comes with stylish pendant and an appropriate black bag.

We’ve no ideas how much the newly styled device costs, but I guess not much more than its original brother. The idea here was to turn the T303 into a perfect gift for the Christmas season. Or at least, that’s my take…

new-samsung-lowend-phones

Samsung is out with two new low-end candybar-shaped handsets - E1410 and E1117. Their low-end nature won’t impress many, but don’t forget these will probably sell in emerging markets or will be offer to first-time mobile phone buyers for free on a contract. Let’s briefly go through each one of them, shall we.

  • Samsung E1410 is a dual-band (900/1800 MHz) GSM/GPRS phone, sporting a 1.63-inch 128×128 pixels CSTN display, 4MB of internal memory and large battery (1000 mAh), which should reportedly allow the device to work up to 11.5 hours in talk and up to 546 hours in standby mode. Size wise, it measures 108×46×15.3 mm.
  • Then there’s Samsung E1117, which comes with the same-kind-of screen and battery, but less internal memory (900 Kb) and with a built-in FM receiver. As for the size, the E1117 measures 106.4×45×15.4 mm and has a weight of 79 grams.

Interestingly enough, both devices lack a camera and music playback software. Samsung hasn’t provided any details about the pricing nor availability.

wrap2_view1_610x434

There’s little doubt that as we inch closer to the technological singularity, video-enabled glasses will play a part. Unfortunately, manufacturers have yet to produce a pair that don’t make you look like a complete idiot, and bionic eye camera implants still seem a ways off.

Luckily, the folks at Vuzix must have grown tired of all the Geordi La Forge jokes, as their latest pair of video glasses look astonishingly normal. While there’s no guarantee that the Vuzix Wrap 920AV won’t induce muffled laughter from everyone around you, they do promise to combine virtual reality capabilities and augmented reality features into one of the least obnoxious designs we’ve seen yet. The Wrap 920AV glasses will supposedly connect with almost any media player, and include built in headphones and individual focal adjustments.

No word on pricing or exact specs, but more details are sure to be revealed at CES.
