As the swine flu outbreak deepens, panicked citizens of North America are donning face masks. In Mexico City's downtown square, the Zócalo, for example, the army handed out face masks, and customs officials on U.S. borders are wearing protective personal gear, such as gloves and masks. (Click here for images.) But do surgical masks offer effective protection against viruses? In 2003, Jon Cohen wrote that the SARS virus, which is just 100 nanometers in size, can easily pass through such barriers. And there's every reason to believe that swine flu, at 80 to 120 nanometers, can, too. The original article is reprinted below.

Masks: a poor prophylacticThe dramatic photos of surgical-masked people walking the streets of Asian cities hit by severe acute respiratory syndrome pose the question: Do the masks offer them any meaningful protection against the disease?
Viruses, including the coronavirus that scientists believe may be the cause of SARS, are so tiny that they can easily pass through such barriers. Several studies even have shown that surgical masks fail to prevent transmission of the much larger mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes TB. While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that people who have SARS wear these masks, they do not even recommend them for people in contact with those patients unless the infected person can't wear one. Wearing surgical masks outdoors, where virus-laden particles easily disperse, has even less value.
CDC does advise health-care workers working with SARS patients to wear a special mask called an N-95 respirator. But even these masks offer limited protection from coronaviruses. The name of the mask says it all. The "95" means the mask, if properly fitted—and that "fit factor" presents a big if—can filter out particles down to .3 microns 95 percent of the time. (A human hair is roughly 100 microns in diameter.) Human coronaviruses measure between .1 and .2 microns, which is one to two times below the cutoff.
The University of Cincinnati's Sergey Grinshpun has studied N-95 respirators and says it all comes down to "collection efficiency." N-95s made by different manufacturers have different collection efficiencies below the .3 cutoff. In other words, one company's mask, if properly fitted, might filter out 92 percent of coronaviruses, while another might catch only 50 percent.
"It seems to offer better protection than nothing," Grinshpun says. And he notes that viruses often travel on top of larger carrier molecules—like globs of mucus—making it easier to filter them. That's why CDC Director Julie Gerberding last week noted that covering your face with a T-shirt might help if you come in close contact with an infected person.
To efficiently protect yourself from coronaviruses, you would need to wear a full-faced mask with a high-efficiency particle air filter. But such HEPA filter masks cause what Grinshpun calls "quite a discomfort" in short order.Any mask clearly wards off one bug: fear. Confoun0064ingly, the sight of so many people wearing masks also spreads fear. And there's no measure of collection efficiency or fit factors that can help humans out of that pickle.

Swine flu in India – is situation worse than we are thinking?

Swine flu in India has already claimed five lives in last seven days. And if we believe Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad – one-third of the Indian population was likely to get infected with the virus over the next two years – which means about 33 crore Indians. What he however added that according to these WHO predictions – most people would suffer only mild symptoms of the disease.
Though the Government is trying to underplay the situation may be so that people do not panic – the situation is clearly alarming. Consider these statistics:
Argentina: 7 H1N1 infections and 337 deaths (Very low %)
USA: 6,506 with H1N1 infection and 436 deaths (6.7%)
Australia: 30,000 confirmed H1N1 cases with 85 deaths (0.28%)
India: 782 positive H1N1 cases 5 deaths (5.75%)
What looks like is that Indian pattern is more closer to USA. Evene if we consider Indian pattern in isolation and extrapolate the current situation (if not phenomenal measures are taken) then if 33 crore Indian are affected by H1N1 virus (as indicated by health minister) then at about 5% there will be huge loss of life. May be what the minister have meant that 33 crore people will be required to be screened and mush less will be the serious confirmed cases?
But in any way the situation is worse than you can think of and as an individual ensure that you take all precautions. And if you catch the virus immediately try to isolate yourself at a quarentine.

How does swine influenza virus spread?

The new swine flu virus is highly contagious, that is it spreads from person to person. The virus is spread through the droplets that come out of the nose or mouth when someone coughs or sneezes. If someone coughs or sneezes and they do not cover it, those droplets can spread about one metre (3ft). If you are very nearby you might breathe them in.

Or, if someone coughs or sneezes into their hand, those droplets and the virus within them are easily transferred to surfaces that the person touches, such as door handles, hand rails, telephones and keyboards. If you touch these surfaces and touch your face, the virus can enter your system, and you can become infected.

While most pregnant women with swine flu will only have mild symptoms, there is a higher risk of complications. If you are pregnant and think you may have swine flu, or have a sick child under one year old, call your GP - do not use the new National Pandemic Flu Service.

The National Pandemic Flu Service
A National Pandemic Flu Service has been launched. This will free up GPs so they can focus their efforts on helping those in at risk groups and patients with other illnesses.
If any of the below apply, contact your GP directly - do not use the National Pandemic Flu Service.
§ you are pregnant
§ you have a sick child under one year old
§ your child has a serious underlying illness
§ your child's condition suddenly gets much worse
§ your child's condition is still getting worse after five days

Why pregnant women are more at risk
In pregnancy, the immune system is naturally suppressed. This means that pregnant women are more likely to catch swine flu, and if they do catch it, they are more likely to develop complications (see below).
Don't panic: your immune system still functions and the risk of complications is very small. Most pregnant women will only have mild symptoms.

Symptoms and risks
If you are pregnant and you catch swine flu, the symptoms should be similar to those of regular flu. Typical symptoms are a fever and a cough, but you may also have:

tiredness
headache
aching muscles
runny nose
sore throat
nausea
diarrhoea

Most pregnant women will have only mild symptoms and recover within a week. However, there is evidence from previous flu pandemics that pregnant women are more likely to develop complications.

Possible complications are:
pneumonia (an infection of the lungs), difficulty breathing, and
dehydration.

In pregnant women, these are more likely to happen in the second and third trimester.

If a pregnant woman develops a complication of swine flu, such as pneumonia, there is a small chance this will lead to premature labour or miscarriage. There is not yet enough information to know precisely how likely these birth risks are.

It is therefore important to be well prepared and to take precautions against swine flu.

Special precautions
If you are pregnant, you can reduce your risk of infection by avoiding unnecessary travel and avoiding crowds where possible.

Pregnant women should also follow the general advice outlined in the box, top right. Good hygiene is essential.

If a family member or other close contact has swine flu, your doctor may prescribe you antiviral medication (usually Relenza) as a prophylactic (preventative) measure.

If you think that you may have swine flu, call your doctor for an assessment immediately. If your doctor confirms swine flu over the phone, you will be prescribed antiviral medication to take as soon as possible (see box, left).

Unless you have swine flu symptoms, carry on attending your antenatal appointments to monitor the progress of your pregnancy.

Antiviral drugs can be used to treat swine flu or to prevent infection with swine flu viruses. The anti-viral medicines oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) are being used to treat people with swine flu. Antiviral drugs work by preventing the flu virus from reproducing. To be effective you need to take them within 48 hours of the symptoms beginning. These flu drugs can decrease the duration of the flu by 1 to 2 days if used within this early time period. These antivirals are usually given for a period of about 5-7 days. It's unclear whether these drugs can prevent complications of the flu. Tamiflu is approved for prevention and treatment in people 1 year old and older. Relenza is approved for treatment of people 7 years old and older and for prevention in people 5 years old and older. These medications must be prescribed by a health care professional.

Side effects: Side effects of antiviral drugs may include nervousness, poor concentration, nausea, and vomiting. Relenza is not recommended for people with a history of breathing problems, such as asthma, because it may cause a worsening of breathing problems. Discuss side effects with your doctor.

Self medication: Antibiotics are a no-no. Chances are that antibiotics will not help your flu symptoms. That's because flu, colds, and most sore throats and bronchitis are caused by viruses. In addition, taking antibiotics when you have a virus may do more harm than good. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics only cure certain infections due to bacteria -- and if taken carelessly, you may get more serious health problems than you bargained for.Is there a vaccine to treat swine flu virus? No, there isn’t a vaccine yet. But vaccines are being made in large quantities. Clinical tests will begin in August 2009. Depending on how long federal officials wait for the results of these tests, tens of millions of doses of swine flu vaccine could be ready as soon as September 2009, with more vaccine becoming available each month thereafter. The first doses of vaccine likely will go to pregnant women and young children ages 6 months to 4 years, with older school kids to follow.

I had to admit that using a BlackBerry takes a little getting used to. The 8830 has this tiny track-ball mouse for interface that is reminiscent of Atari’s Centipede video game. However, once I used the Setup Wizard, the BlackBerry opened up to me.

In a matter of minutes, I had figured out how to view my email online, and could surf the web. As a newbie to smartphones, I have quickly discovered that there are some limitations to surfing the web online with a tiny screen.

Just to reiterate a point, the BlackBerry 8830 is for businesspeople. There is no camera, but there is a microSD. That SD is tough to access, as a user must remove the entire battery cover to get to it. However, everything else works like clockwork once you get used to it.

As for the price of the BlackBerry 8830, it is available for $399.99 with a two-year contract from Verizon. In fact, you can even get it here for a $100 discount.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze Review

The Sansa Fuze from SanDisk, is a cool little MP3/4 player along the same vein as the iPod Nano. We’ve recently been sent one to play with so here are our thoughts and findings (or a review so to speak).

Aesthetically the Fuze is a cute little player.The physical UI consists of a rotating front dial which also acts as the 4 navigation buttons with the center button for selection. The display crisp with a resolution of 220 x 176, large enough for watching the odd music video but you wouldn’t want to watch a feature length film on it. Sound quality was good (though as with just about any MP3 player the supplied headphones aren’t the greatest). What most impressed me about the Fuze are the extra features that you don’t find on other (note iPod) players, including:

Built in microphone
FM radio
microSD Slot, a really cheap way to expand the capacity
Easy to transfer files (drag and drop) without the need of propriety software

Though there are a few downsides:

Propriety USB connection, it obviously comes the cable but a standard mini USB connection would be much more convenient especially for charging
You bookmark videos but not audio books

I guess I didn’t know that the Mobile Gaming market is growing, but I suppose it was only a matter of time before somebody made joysticks for mobile phone games. In the case of the BGP100 Bluetooth Game Pad, these controllers are wireless.

The BGP100 has a 4-way pad for directional control, and seven programmable buttons for whatever else the game requires. As you can see, these controllers can affix themselves to the side of the mobile device with the use of included rubber strips.

I am guessing that this next product’s name is pronounced “Sci-fi”. Of course, many die-hard science fiction fans despise the word sci-fi, but I think that a lot of people are going to like this CyFi.

The CyFi Hi-fi Wireless Audio is designed for those who want to take the sound from their iPod or Bluetooth cellular phone and share it with the rest of the world. It is also for those who like running, biking, or anything that requires speakers on the go.

The CyFi comes in two forms. The first is designed to be used with Bluetooth A2DP enabled cellular phones. The second works with the iPod, and requires the user to plug a dongle into their iPod for the wireless transmission. This iPod version works for all iPod models except the Mini, Shuffle, and the iPhone.

I definitely would like to give some award to the design team for the shape of these speakers. Someone definitely used a flat clamshell as their source of inspiration. I also admire how the song advance and volume control buttons were seamlessly worked into the framework.

The CyFi requires two hours of charging for about six hours worth of playing time. The CyFi has just been released last October, and is currently available on the My CyFi website for $179 (Bluetooth version) or $199 (iPod version).

Cell phones have advanced by leaps and bounds over the years, and they are now much more powerful compared to computers that you used as desktops a couple of decades ago. In fact, most of today’s modern handsets are pretty much toned down versions of netbooks, not only being able to help you keep in touch with friends and family but boast a whole host of functionalities including playback of audio and video, surfing the Internet and even having pocket versions of productivity tools such as Microsoft Office. This is a two-edged sword, since that means viruses that plague the computer world can also wreak havoc upon the cell phone universe. Case in point, the most recent “SMS Curse of Silence” security exploit that crashes the SMS function of the phone to prevent users from receiving new text messages.

The SMS Curse of Silence affects a wide range of Symbian OS-based smartphones, where potential infected handsets are powered by UIQ as well as S60 2nd Edition Feature Packs 2 and 3, 3rd Edition and 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 operating systems. Those who are running on S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 or 5th Edition can heave a sigh of relieve since they won’t be affected. Guess that means a whole lot of Nokia handsets are in trouble, and with many people sending New Year greetings all over the place, the downtime experienced by infected phones could grow to be pretty serious.

The Denial-of-Service attack involves sending one or, depending on the phone model, several specifically formatted SMS messages to the targeted smartphone. These messages will crash the phone’s SMS system, although it won’t render the phone unusable. Older models won’t display symptoms of the attack that would be visible to the user, though newer handsets will show alerts that the handset is running out of memory or even experience constantly flashing message icons after the attack. There is a way to clean this mess up by using F-Secure’s Mobile Security solution that prevents this exploit by detecting it and by repairing the phone so that users won’t lose their precious inbox messages. Most of us who shop at Wal-Mart tend to think that we are getting a better bargain there compared to elsewhere, which is true most of the time if you want to put up with sub-par service and even the risk of getting trampled to death due to insufficient security during mad rush days like Black Friday. Still, for folks who have yet to jump aboard the iPhone 3G bandwagon after more than half a year and want to do so, they can now head down to their local Wal-Mart from Sunday onwards, although you won’t find it to be much cheaper compared to those found in AT&T and Apple Stores. In fact, it will retail for $197 - a (sarcastically) whopping $2 discount over the standard $199 price point for the 8GB version while the 16GB model is going for $297. Does this mean you get more value out of a shorter contract? No - the phones are still attached to a new 2-year service agreement with AT&T or with a qualified upgrade.

It is quite a disappointment, really, to see prices that Wal-Mart have announced. They’re pretty much in line with iPhone 3G prices everywhere else, so forget about rumors of Wal-Mart selling them on the cheap. Some Apple bloggers did point out the possibility of a $99 iPhone 3G, but I guess that is no longer a possibility considering how tight fisted Steve Jobs can be when it comes to having full control over his company and its products. Those who are interested will be able to make a bee-line for Wal-Mart stores from this Sunday onwards, but bear in mind not all Wal-Marts will carry the iPhone 3G - only 2,493 of Wal-Mart’s 3,200 locations will have it, so do call them beforehand. Remember back when cellular phones didn’t have cameras? Now it is a requirement. Considering the low megapixel cameras that are often tacked on to high-priced smartphones, it is nice to see a cellular phone that invests a lot of time in the camera.

In the case of the JingPeng E1181, it tried something new. This phone allows the user to completely detach the camera as well as its rechargeable battery and place it up to 30 feet away. Wireless video footage can then be transmitted live from the camera section to the phone portion via RF. The user can then watch it on the phone’s three inch screen.

It sounds like something that James Bond would use on a covert mission. It also sounds like something perverts would use to get some shots of the ladies locker room. I suppose “use wisely” should be stamped on this product.

Still, you have to admire a company that tries something as innovative as a cellular phone/camera combo. Yes, most users already have a camera on their phone, but it is only used in cases when they don’t have their better-quality digital camera available. Why not make a cellular phone camera that is so good that it deserves to be detached from the cellular phone altogether?

Let us hope that JinPeng did this, but my source does not have the Megapixel count of the camera. I do know that the E1181 has other features like a touchscreen, FM tuner, Dual Sim Slots, and Bluetooth 2.0. It is available for a price of $155.

The USB Gas Stove Cup Warmer

One of the most obnoxious things is when you finally decide to take a break from work to make a cup of coffee or tea. Then after you’ve brought back the steaming cup, you get wrapped up in work again and inevitably it gets cold. You don’t want to get back up to heat it, either because you’re busy or are just too lazy. Which is when a cup warmer comes in very handy. This isn’t the first cup warmer to be sold, but this one offers a retro design. That at least gives it a little more edge above the competition.

It sadly doesn’t have any built-in extras, like a clock or a USB hub. However, it’s a neat design and it’s affordable, so it’s probably worth checking out. Brando’s Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard

There is nothing that gives a gadget blogger more pleasure than to report on gadgets from the Far East like Thanko and Brando. You might remember the MP4 Camera watch I reported on a few days ago from Thanko, and today’s interesting Asian product is the Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard (actual name) from Brando.

This keyboard has three obvious features in its name. The first is the wireless capacity, and it uses 2.4GHz rather than Bluetooth. The second is the backlit feature that makes it glow in the dark, which requires two AAA batteries to stay in operation. The third is its size. I’m not certain why you would want a tiny keyboard, but considering how these netbooks are getting increasingly smaller, there might be a demand for smaller keyboards for a desktop.

It has been suggested that the Brando Backlit Wireless Keyboard could be used for home theater PCs. That idea has a lot of merit, since consumer electronics companies are making a lot of All-in-one PC/computers these days. Personally, I believe we are entering an age where if you want a computer then it will automatically include software for a television, and televisions will be installed with computers.

Yes, we all look forward to the day when PCs and television markets will be as one. As for today, you should be able to pre-order the Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard from the Brando Web site for about $47.00.

Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds has extra screen

This isn’t the first time that we covered the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, but I’ve just learned that Lenovo is planning to upgrade this model with the W700ds, which has one of the coolest features of any notebook, a slide out screen!

The screen is a 10.2 inch LED display that the user can pull out from the side, and has the option of tilting it forward or backward on a hinge. You can’t help but love a feature like this, as a laptop will have an extra screen for word processing, text messaging, or whatever you didn’t have space enough to do on your laptop screen before.

Other features on the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds include the Intel Core 2 Extreme or Core 2 Quad, 8 GB of RAM, 980 GB of storage memory, and the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M. At maximum brightness on the screens, the battery life isn’t long at about 2 hours.

The Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds will be available to ship next month, at a price of about $3,600. Sprint’s 3G/4G USB Modem U300

Yesterday, Sprint announced that it will launch a dual-mode 3G/4G wireless broadband modem specifically designed for laptops. This device, known as the Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300, is designed to plug right in the USB port for quick Internet access.

The U300 is able to access Sprint’s 3G cellular data network and the new WiMax wireless network that Sprint is building as part of their new Clearwire program. This 4G program will allow download speeds between 2 Mbps and 4 Mpbs.

The 4G network has only been recently launched in the Baltimore area, but it has been slow to catch on. With any luck, 4G should be in place in every major city by the end of 2009. If a user should be out of range of the 4G network, it will automatically go to the 3G, which has download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps.

The U300 should be available on Sunday, and costs about $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. As for the new 3G and 4G combination plan, that will probably cost about $79.99 in monthly fees. Some of you might find that high, but it is a small price to pay for being able to have Internet access wherever you go.

Mail on Ovi

Samsung Unveils Two Low-end Candybars - E1410 and E1117

Samsung is out with two new low-end candybar-shaped handsets - E1410 and E1117. Their low-end nature won’t impress many, but don’t forget these will probably sell in emerging markets or will be offer to first-time mobile phone buyers for free on a contract. Let’s briefly go through each one of them, shall we.

Samsung E1410 is a dual-band (900/1800 MHz) GSM/GPRS phone, sporting a 1.63-inch 128×128 pixels CSTN display, 4MB of internal memory and large battery (1000 mAh), which should reportedly allow the device to work up to 11.5 hours in talk and up to 546 hours in standby mode. Size wise, it measures 108×46×15.3 mm.
Then there’s Samsung E1117, which comes with the same-kind-of screen and battery, but less internal memory (900 Kb) and with a built-in FM receiver. As for the size, the E1117 measures 106.4×45×15.4 mm and has a weight of 79 grams.

Interestingly enough, both devices lack a camera and music playback software. Samsung hasn’t provided any details about the pricing nor availability.

Sneak Peek at Vuzix Wrap 920AV Glasses

There’s little doubt that as we inch closer to the technological singularity, video-enabled glasses will play a part. Unfortunately, manufacturers have yet to produce a pair that don’t make you look like a complete idiot, and bionic eye camera implants still seem a ways off.

Luckily, the folks at Vuzix must have grown tired of all the Geordi La Forge jokes, as their latest pair of video glasses look astonishingly normal. While there’s no guarantee that the Vuzix Wrap 920AV won’t induce muffled laughter from everyone around you, they do promise to combine virtual reality capabilities and augmented reality features into one of the least obnoxious designs we’ve seen yet. The Wrap 920AV glasses will supposedly connect with almost any media player, and include built in headphones and individual focal adjustments.

No word on pricing or exact specs, but more details are sure to be revealed at CES.

The Good: T-Mobile has long been known for pushing the boundaries of mobile technology and the SDA (Smart Digital Assistant) is no exception. Sporting the modern Windows Mobile 5 operating system, Bluetooth, WiFi and EDGE, a 1.3 megapixel camera with a variety of enhancement options and full media support including DRM, it has everything for the mobile traveller.

The Bad: Lacking a QWERTY keyboard and with a rather cramped keypad, typing longer messages may be difficult for those with longer digits. Adding additional memory is also a little cumbersome with the expansion slot resting underneath the battery. Also the limitation of being able to view but not edit Word; Excel and PDF documents may be problematic for business users.

The Bottom Line: All in all this is a great offering for the modern mobile user with an ideal balance of features for both productivity and entertainment. The long talk and standby times adds extra appeal as does the large 64MB internal ROM and RAM memory banks.

The Good: This is a tri-band flip phone identical to the Samsung SGH-309 with the addition of Bluetooth and a different color scheme. It has a VGA camera on board with a variety of photographic options and picture resolutions. The phone can also be customized via a number of operational and thematic settings. Call quality is excellent both through the earpiece and when using the speakerphone.

The Bad: The phone is very pricy for the feature set. Both displays are hard to see especially in bright light. The keys are small and rather flat, making dialling by feel difficult and causing frequent mis-dials. Standby time is also disappointingly short, lasting just 3 days despite the rated 9.

The Bottom Line: This phone isn’t likely to win any beauty or technology awards anytime soon, and those wanting anything more than super call quality should probably look elsewhere.

The Good: The Samsung T409 is a mid-range phone with a simple feature set, featuring internal and external displays, a 1.3 megapixel camera, support for e-mail and the most popular instant messaging clients and a WiFi receiver for connecting to pre-configured wireless networks. For ease of use the phone has a number of programmable shortcut keys and a hotlist where five ‘favourite numbers’ can be listed for easy dialling.

The Bad: Despite a wide range of photographic options, the T409’s camera is disappointing with pictures appearing washed out and hazy. The speakerphone also suffers from poor sound quality.

The Bottom Line: This phone’s greatest asset has to be, without doubt, the wireless connectivity which allows users to browse the web, make and receive VoIP calls thus saving money, particularly on long distance calls. The phone is simple yet effective and is more than suitable for business and leisure consumers alike.

Review of LG Voyager (VX10000) / Verizon Wireless Voyager

The Good: The Voyager also known as the VX10000, is one of LG’s first touch screen phones to target the US and includes a more iPhone-like interface based on that of the Prada phone; users can place calls, play AAC/MP3/WMA music, and take 2-megapixel photos almost exclusively from the screen. It offers a generous features set that includes EV-DO support, V Cast Mobile TV Bluetooth, a top-notch Web browser, and an integrated GPS application. And if that’s not enough, its call quality was excellent.

The Bad: The LG Voyager VX10000’s camera lacks such extra options as a flash and Wi-Fi, and its photo quality was below par. The touch screen can be clunky at times, and the streaming video quality and EV-DO connection speed were sporadic.

The Bottom Line: Though we had some minor complaints here and there, the Voyager’s sleek design, generous feature set and excellent performance make it the best LG messaging and multimedia phone by far. What we like most about this phone is the improvements LG has made to the Verizon Wireless interface. Verizon Wireless believes, that users like to learn an interface and then find it useful on the next phone they buy. We don’t buy it. Phones are improving too fast, with too many new features every season, and users want a phone that makes sense. Maybe it made sense to bury the touted HTML browser under the “Get It Now: News and Info” submenu in the past, but now, that’s the last place we’d look.

The Good: The T-Mobile Wing is a quad-band world handset with a full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 megapixel camera and is one of the first on the market to boast the new Windows Mobile 6 Professional Smartphone operating system. It also features the full Office Mobile suite which allows both creation and viewing of documents. There are a number of shortcut keys to frequent used applications, and the display effortlessly changes from portrait to landscape when deploying the QWERTY keyboard.

The Bad: With all this gadgetry on board, the handset is a little on the heavy side. Also, it sometimes behaves somewhat sluggishly, especially when multiple applications are open at the same time, which also takes a toll on battery life. Whereas the display is quite clear under normal operation, it can be difficult to read in direct sunlight.

The Bottom Line: T-Mobile has taken mobile productivity to the next level with the Wing, with a raft of useful features, enhancements and capabilities. However, its weight coupled with several bugs and performance issues give some pause for consideration.
